Not every display problem is a broken panel, and the difference matters because it changes the cost. Here is what we see most often and what each symptom usually points to.
Cracked Screen Replacement
Impact and pressure damage
Spider web cracks, a dark spreading blotch of leaked liquid crystal, or a screen that has taken a direct knock. The panel is damaged and needs replacing.
This is the most common laptop screen repair we handle, and usually the most straightforward. If part of the image is still visible, the rest of your laptop is almost certainly fine.
Flickering Screen Repair
Panel, cable or graphics fault
Flickering can come from the panel, the video cable running through the hinge, or the graphics hardware. Cable faults are common on laptops opened and closed dozens of times a day.
Quick test: connect an external monitor. If that display is stable while the built in screen flickers, the fault is almost always the panel or the cable.
Black Screen Repair
Backlight and panel failure
If the fan spins up and you can see a very faint image when you shine a torch at the screen on an angle, the backlight or panel has failed rather than the laptop itself.
A completely dead laptop with no lights and no fan is a different problem, and one for our broader laptop repair service.
Lines & Dead Pixels
Panel level display faults
Vertical or horizontal lines, patches of colour that do not belong, or clusters of dead pixels are all panel level faults.
A few dead pixels can be lived with, but lines tend to spread over time and are worth addressing before they take over the display.
Touch Screen Laptop Repair
Touch models and 2 in 1 convertibles
The glass digitiser is bonded to the display panel, so cracked glass usually means replacing the whole assembly rather than the screen alone.
If the image is perfect but touch has stopped responding, the digitiser or its connection has failed. We test pen input as well as finger touch before your laptop goes back.

How much does a laptop screen replacement cost?

Is it worth replacing a laptop screen?
Usually yes. A screen replacement is typically a fraction of the cost of a comparable new laptop, and the rest of your machine is unaffected by a broken panel. The exception is a very old laptop that was already struggling, where the money is better spent elsewhere.
Can a cracked laptop screen be repaired without replacing it?
No. Once a laptop panel is physically cracked, the liquid crystal layer is compromised and there is no way to repair it. The panel has to be replaced.
My screen works but the image is very dim. Is that a screen fault?
Often it is the backlight, which is part of the display assembly, so yes. It can occasionally be a settings or driver issue instead, which costs nothing to fix, and that is one of the first things we check.
Will the replacement screen match my original?
We match the specification of your original panel, including resolution, touch capability and features such as anti glare coating. If a matching panel is unavailable and the closest equivalent differs in any way, we will tell you before proceeding.
