Industry-Wide Price Increases: Important Update for Our Customers
What's Happening in the Market
The global computer hardware industry is experiencing unprecedented supply challenges driven primarily by the explosive growth in artificial intelligence datacentre infrastructure. This AI boom has created massive demand for memory and storage components, leading to severe supply constraints that are affecting every corner of the technology market.
Over the past two months alone, we've witnessed memory component prices surge by approximately 300 percent. Storage components have experienced similar dramatic increases. These aren't minor market fluctuations - these are fundamental supply and demand imbalances that industry analysts, including IDC's recent market analysis, predict will continue throughout 2026 until component manufacturing capacity catches up with demand.
Impact on Computer Pricing
As a direct result of these component shortages, all major computer manufacturers have announced significant price increases. Starting in December 2025, we've received official notifications from HP, Dell, Lenovo, Dynabook and other major vendors, confirming price increases ranging from 10 to 20 percent across their product lines.
These increases affect virtually every category of computing hardware:
Entry-Level and Mainstream Laptops: Consumer and mainstream business laptops are seeing the steepest price increases of 15-20 percent. Because memory and storage components represent a larger proportion of the total cost in these systems, the component price surge has a more dramatic impact on final pricing.
Mobile Workstations: Professional CAD laptops and mobile workstations are experiencing more moderate increases of around 10 percent for the time being. While these systems use high-capacity memory and storage, the overall cost is distributed across professional-grade components like certified graphics cards and premium build quality, meaning component costs represent a smaller percentage of the total.
Desktop Computers: Entry and mid-level desktop systems face increases of 15-18 percent, while high-end workstations see increases closer to 10-12 percent, following the same pattern as laptops.
Servers: Server pricing varies significantly based on configuration, with entry-level models seeing increases of 15-18 percent while enterprise-grade systems with professional components see increases of 10-12 percent.
Memory and Storage Upgrades: Standalone RAM modules especially, and solid-state drives have experienced the most dramatic price increases, with most memory configurations more than doubling in price compared to just a few months ago.
Important Note: These price increases are industry-wide and affect all authorised resellers and retailers in Australia, and around the world. This isn't a matter of one supplier raising prices while others hold steady - every major global manufacturer is implementing similar increases in response to the same market pressures.
Why This Is Happening
The root cause is straightforward: the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has created unprecedented demand for high-performance memory and storage components. Major technology companies are building massive datacentres to support AI development and deployment, consuming memory and storage components at rates the industry hasn't previously encountered.
Semiconductor manufacturers are working to expand production capacity, but building new fabrication facilities takes years, not months. Until this additional manufacturing capacity comes online - which analysts expect will happen gradually throughout 2026 and into 2027 - supply will remain constrained and prices will remain elevated.
What This Means for You
If you're currently evaluating a laptop, desktop, or server purchase, timing has become an important consideration. Current stock levels represent the last opportunity to purchase at pre-increase pricing, and once this inventory is sold, all new stock will reflect the higher manufacturer pricing.
Current Market Outlook
Based on manufacturer communications and market analysis, here's what we anticipate:
Short Term (Q1 2026): Prices will increase immediately as current stock depletes and new inventory arrives at higher cost. This represents the steepest price adjustment period.
Medium Term (2026): Elevated pricing is expected to remain the norm throughout 2026 as component supply gradually improves but continues to lag behind demand.
Long Term (2027 onwards): As additional manufacturing capacity comes online and demand stabilises, we expect prices to moderate, though they may not return to early 2025 levels.
Our Commitment to You
At Landmark Computers, we've built our reputation on providing exceptional value backed by knowledgeable, down-to-earth customer service. While we cannot control global component pricing, we remain committed to several principles:
Competitive Pricing: We will continue to work closely with our manufacturer partners and distributors to secure the best possible pricing and pass those savings to our customers. Our buying power and long-standing relationships mean we can often negotiate better terms than smaller retailers.
Transparent Communication: We won't hide behind vague explanations. When prices change, we'll explain why, just as we're doing now.
Expert Guidance: Our experienced team will help you make smart purchasing decisions that balance immediate needs with long-term value.
Quality Service: Whether you purchase now or later, you'll receive the same excellent service, technical support, and after-sales care that has been our hallmark for over 30 years.
Take Advantage of Current Inventory
While we never want to create artificial urgency, the reality is that current stock levels represent genuine savings compared to what's coming. If you've been considering a laptop, desktop, or server purchase, securing your order now means locking in pre-increase pricing that may save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars on higher-specification systems.
Our team can help you assess whether purchasing now makes sense for your specific situation, or whether waiting might be the better option despite the price increases. We're here to provide honest advice, not pressure tactics.
Looking Ahead
The computer hardware industry has weathered supply challenges before, and it will adapt to this one as well. Manufacturing capacity will increase, supply chains will adjust, and eventually, the market will stabilise. However, that stabilisation is realistically 12 to 18 months away.
For businesses and individuals who need reliable computing hardware to get work done, the question isn't whether to purchase, but when to purchase. The answer to that question depends on your specific circumstances, budget, and timeline.
How We Can Help
Our team is ready to assist with:
Needs Assessment: Helping you determine the right specifications for your requirements without over-specifying (and overspending).
Inventory Availability: Checking current stock levels and availability timelines for specific models.
Configuration Advice: Optimising system configurations to maximise value while meeting your performance requirements.
Budget Planning: Providing accurate quotes for immediate purchase or future planning based on anticipated pricing.
Alternative Solutions: Exploring refurbished or alternative models that might meet your needs at better price points.
